Criminal Law is a branch of public law which can be said to be the basis of legal systems and the very reason legal systems are required to be set in place. It is the law regarding severe wrongs that are done to the people of a country. The branch of criminal law covers the substantial law which provides us with different punishments for different crimes and how these punishments are handed to the perpetrators as well as the defenses available to them. Criminology on the other hand is the study of criminals themselves. The foundational Question of Criminology is why do criminals commit crime? In the pursuit of an answer you will study different researches done on crime and criminals including common traits of criminals, the behavioral similarities between criminals, the view of victims on criminals etc, reformative versus retributive justice etc.
